You Don’t Have to Suffer

We all fail at some point. It’s inevitable.

How we react to that failure is what is going to set us apart from our old selves. At the end of the day, isn’t that what we are trying to do? Change who we are?

Based on what I’ve seen, failure is a direct result of a lack of motivation. Let me explain.

From a trainer’s perspective, someone will reach out to me or start working with me and has what feel’s like unlimited motivation. They are ready for that change and will do whatever it takes to get there. Fast forward 2 weeks, and the motivation has begun to dwindle a bit, workouts aren’t as easy as they one were. They are having uncontrollable cravings and before you know it, they’ve fallen off the program.

This is why we fail.

A person’s ability to make a lasting change is not based on motivation. It is based on determination and consistency. These two factors is what will keep even the most demotivated individual on track. And while I realize nobody is perfect, the determined individual will at least stay on the program because they know they HAVE to do certain things whether the FEEL like it or not.

We fail because we set such unrealistic expectations for ourselves based on our surroundings instead of what is right for us as individuals. Comparing yourself to a stranger in the gym or Instagram will never provide you with satisfaction. You have no idea of that person’s history, genetics, abilities, mindset, lifestyle, etc.

To burst your bubble early, know this: You will never be the most shredded/muscular/leanest/toned/in shape person. Never. There will always be a person to one up you. I’m not saying this to crush your spirits, I’m being realistic. It is also to further the point that you should only focus on yourself and set realistic goals for your progress. Not #bodygoals for random people online.

Lastly, we fail because we simply do not have to knowledge. That’s not an insult. Nobody knows everything. And while I know fitness, I certainly don’t know accounting, which is why I outsource for that.

There is a plethora of information on the internet and it’s honestly not the best thing. There is a TON of misinformation which can lead people down unbearable roads if they don’t understand the information that’s laid out for them. There will always be people trying to sell you products online (detox kits, supplements, training, books, etc) and that’s their business sure. But if you don’t know what is worth your time and money, then how will you know what will ACTUALLY help you?

A few points to avoid any confusion:

  • If you follow fitness leaders on any social platforms, you’re on the right track.
  • If something sounds too good to be true, it is.
  • There are always general recommendations for food and supplements, but there usually isn’t a one size fits all.

To sum up. Stop relying on motivation. Stop comparing yourself to others. Stop trying every new fad and trend that’s out, it’s likely garbage and you will end up right back where you started. Hire a coach or find a workout buddy that you can tackle your goals with, it will make the experience more manageable.
